Each of the headings is a link to the website described in the paragraph below the heading; the link will open in a new browser window. We try to keep these links up to date but sadly we cannot guarantee that they will all work; also please note that we can take no responsibility whatever for the contents of these web sites as they are not under our control.

Citizens Advice

logo

Citizens Advice service is the national charity that regulates the thousands of independent Citizens Advice Bureaux across the country, and which provides us with much of the reference material which we use in our advice work. Citizens Advice is also very active as a campaigning organisation based on the problems being raised at CAB's by individuals across the country.

HM Revenue & Customs

HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) was formed on the 18 April 2005, following the merger of Inland Revenue and HM Customs and Excise Departments. The HMRC web site gives access to a large number of documents on tax rules and practices and can be a powerful self-help facility for anyone with an income tax problem. HMRC describe their role as "we are here to ensure the correct tax is paid at the right time, whether this relates to payment of taxes received by the department or entitlement to benefits paid".

Livingtogether Project

This is an Advicenow initiative. About two million couples are currently co-habiting in the UK, with the number expected to rise to three million by 2021. Although cohabitation confers no legal rights many people assume that couples who have lived together for a while have the same rights as married couples. This can lead to serious problems in housing, finance and other areas when an unmarried couple split up or when one of them dies.

Shelter

In their own words "Shelter understands the damage that bad housing causes. Every day we deal with the effects it has on people's lives. This is why we're working hard to ensure that everyone has a suitable, decent and affordable home." The site is particularly useful for those faced with homelessness for whatever reason.
